Mario Batali's toney flagship. Excellent food and wine. Always jammed. The single word that bests sums up the scene here is: display. NYC's most ambitious sons and daughters work'n it hard. High PSI. (note: this is not a true binaural recording because the left mic fell out of my ear!)

A worthy wine bar in the West Village. Dark and romantic but also lively. Good wine at reasonable prices. Full of young hipsters, but not particularly daunting. An excellent place to take a date, or just unwind.

This upscale steak house is truly cinematic. Looks like something out of Pulp Fiction with hallucinatory red lighting, flock red walls, and entrancing lounge jazz to set the mood. A fantastic place with great mixed drinks.

A great place to get a sense for the social life of the old money that lives in the surrounding area. Good (traditional American) fare and a clubby but relaxed atmosphere. People let their hair down here. An unusually nice place to hang out. Recommended.

A small gay bar with an intimate and lively atmosphere located just off the #1 Subway line. A long narrow room with the bar on the right and a single pool table in the back. One of those places with great chemistry that you want to return to.
